President Message

It is my pleasure to serve as the President of Hong Kong College of Paediatric Nursing (HKCPN) since 2015. In the new year of 2019, I felt most delighted to announce the launch of our new HKCPN website. Great thanks to Ms. Rebecca Hui, our Secretary and the team to make it realized. The new website introduces a comprehensive profile, an organization structure and Constitution, also contains various aspects of HKCPN. I hope you will find the new website refreshing, allowing easier navigation of our many education programs, news and events as well as facilitating knowledge access.

HKCPN Ltd. was incorporated in Hong Kong on 6 January 2012. Members and Fellows comprises of paediatric nurses from both public and private sectors in Hong Kong. Specialty covers Child and Adolescent Health, Paediatric Oncology, Paediatric Intensive Care, Neonatal Intensive Care and School Health.

Thank to our founding president, Ms. Gloria LUK who laid the solid foundation of our HKCPN. We have more than 300 fellows conferred as grandfather fellows from 2012-2015.

Over the years, the HKCPN council, committees and working group members have been highly committed and working tirelessly and dedicatedly. Starting from designing our logo, building up new committees, website, deriving the HKCPN domain and core competencies, training curriculum, clinical logbook to well gearing up ourselves to conducting training program and examinations at the advanced nursing practice level.

Year 2016 marked a significant milestone of HKCPN. In line with the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing (HKAN)'s mission in certifying qualified advancing practice nurse with the aim to safeguarding quality services and public safety. HKCPN was the 1st Academy College having Fellows conferred through passing Membership Examination and Fellow Exit Assessment in 2016. The Assessment was on par with international standard. We were proud of having Ms. Fiona Smith, distinguished Professional lead in Children and Young People's Nurses, Royal College of Nursing (RCN), United Kingdom, Adviser of the Paediatric Nursing Associations of Europe Network as our on-site external examiner. The success of our Paediatric nurses in the Exam and Assessment proofed their strong commitment and hard work in attaining the advanced practicing level of competence stipulated by our College.

Time flies, we celebrated our 5th anniversary in June 2017, noting the achievement and aspirations that marked our journey from its inception. In the following years, we have focused more on:

  1. Evidence based practice (EBP) and research — EBP becomes the heart in the pre-Fellow Exit Assessment project report/research submitted by candidate. HKCPN continues to offer scholarship to our fellows with priority to the presenter in attending related international conferences and scientific meetings. More efforts will be put on research such as Paediatric Palliative Care in various HA hospitals. Furthermore, HKCPN will continue to collaborate with The Hong Kong Paediatric Society, Hong Kong College of Paediatricians and Hong Kong Paediatric Nurses Association in organizing the Joint Annual Research and Scientific Meeting (JARSM) in the coming years.
  2. Partnership — We will continue to partnering with our Paediatric medical professional bodies, HKAN, other health care disciplines and community partners in organizing seminars, professional fora and conferences.
  3. Knowledge and practice enhancement — structured training courses on Child Mental Health and Workshop on complex cases management were conducted. Simulation training on Palliative Care would be launched in 2019 to cope with the services needs for the benefit of the community.
  4. Advocacy — HKCPN develops as advocate, acts as a unified voice with HKAN and outreaches to key stakeholders and our government to speak up for our children and profession. E.g. Total ban e-cigarette seminar, position statement on Children Palliative Care.
  5. Sustainability and succession planning — HKCPN starts to recruit our Associate Member in 2018 and builds up our Fellow network. In 2018, Paediatric young fellows have been elected as the Chairman, Secretary, and Committee members of Young Fellow Chapters under the HKAN. We hope that the noble vision and mission of HKAN and HKCPN can be passed on successfully.
  6. Greater Bay Area Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau collaborative study in Advanced Practice Nursing Training and Certification — HKCPN is one of the 6 Academy Colleges under HKAN participating in this project to align the standard of advanced and specialized practice in the Greater Bay Area for the benefit of our children.

To have these marked achievements, concerted efforts and dedicated hard work from our Councils, Chairs of Committees and Committee members, our Fellow mentors who are using their own time to guide the mentees are deeply appreciated. Last but not the least, heartfelt thanks extended to our fellows, members, advisers, COS, CGM(N)s, GM(N)s, DOMs, professional partners and hospital coordinators for their unfailing supports to HKCPN.

Let's continue to work together to build up a bright future for our profession and ultimately benefit to our children.
